Biography: Edward Appiah is a Senior Lecturer, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Art and the Head of the Department of Communication Design, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana. He did his doctoral studies in Design Education at the Faculty of Informatics and Design, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Cape Town, South Africa, looking at how technology is informing a new paradigm in Graphic Design. His research interests are in Design for Social Innovation and Sustainability and Technology in Design Education. He is currently liaising with Design for Social Innovation and Sustainability (DESIS), a network of design labs, based in design schools and design-oriented universities, actively involved in promoting and supporting sustainable change, in order to facilitate activities of design in promoting sustainable activities for the underprivileged people. He is the national Treasurer for the Ghana Institution of Graphic Artists (GhIGA), an institution championing design for community innovation and design education in Ghana, and also a member of the Network of Afrika Designs. He is currently the Principal Investigator engaged in an on-going project of developing sustainable environmental sanitation through Design for Social Innovation code named “5-STAR STREET PROJECT” in Kumasi, the second largest city in Ghana– a project that will serve as a catalyst for design intervention for in the city’s sanitation challenges. He is also a reviewer of three (3) international journals and actively engaged in supervising postgraduate students and activities both in Ghana and outside Ghana.
